Two teachers from Baguio City National High School topped Microsoft’s 5th Innovative Teachers Leadership Awards held in Cebu City last February 19-21, 2010.
Mrs. Vilma Ambat, a Filipino teacher of BCNHS-Main and Mr. Adonairam Basingan, an English teacher of BCNHS- Sto. Tomas Annex, were two of four public school teachers awarded as grand winners among 10 semifinalists from different DepEd divisions in the country. Ambat and Basingan, with two other teachers from Muntinlupa National High School and General Santos City High School, will represent the Philippines in the 6th Microsoft Asia-Pacific Regional Innovative Education Forum (RIEF) to be held in Singapore on March 9-11, 2010.
In a similar development, Abigail Kitma of IV-Wisdom and Gabrielle Paul Pascual of IV-Success have been selected to represent the Philippines in the 2nd Innovative Students Forum which is a part of the RIEF. The two students were selected by TakingITGlobal through their participation in an online forum participated by other students from countries in the Asia-Pacific.

Twenty Nine (29) students of Baguio City National High School made it to Saint Louis University’s College Entrance Examination Top 100 (School Year 2010-2011). A total of 553 students from the Main and 109 students from the different annexes passed the said examination. Specifically, 5 from Bakakeng, 15 from Dona Aurora, 19 from Fort del Pilar, 1 from Lindawan, 33 from Loakan, 25 from Rizal, 7 from Roxas, 1 from San Vicente, and 3 from Sto. Tomas made the cut-off.

Third Year and Fourth Year Special Science Program students donned their formal attire during their Juniors-Seniors Promenade held in the Diamond Grand Ballroom of Hotel Supreme last January 30, 2010.
Among the highlights of the event were the special awards. Best in Attire was given to Francis Tan and Deirdre Conde. Jairus Policarpio and Diane Colcol were the Prince and Princess of the night. Bret Zane Labawig and Marian Rimpillo were awarded King and Queen of the night. And Bjorn Vibar and Ma. Gaia Javier were Mr. and Ms. Promenade.
Defeating participants from Northern Luzon, the BCNHS team emerged as the champion in the ASEAN Quest game sponsored by the ASEAN Foundation last January 18, 2010 at the University of Baguio.
Joven Emmanuel Sanchez and Jiron Mohamad successfully completed the game with the highest scores and shortest time. The second prize went to Easter High School while third place was awarded to Pines City National High School-Bonifacio Annex.
The ASEAN Quest is a computer video game that provides information about ASEAN as a regional organization and the ten ASEAN member countries. The game aims to: increase awareness of ASEAN and its activities; make available information on the history, cultures and values of ASEAN member countries and its peoples; and capture the interest of the people, particularly the young, to learn more about ASEAN, how it evolved, what it is doing, and where will it lead.

District II, where Baguio City National High School belongs, has successfully defended its crown during the Palarong Panglungsod held ast December 8-9, 2009.BCNHS students played a major role in defending the title as they emerged victorious in the different games.
In Badminton Boys Singles Category, Norman Elpa grabbed the first placed while Joshua Tamo placed second. Audrey Arid won first place in the Girls Singles Category and Fiona Aguilar placed second. Chastine Dela Cruz and Krizzia Aleth Pasag smashed their opponents as they landed on first place in the Girls Doubles Category. Also in the Mixed Doubles Category, Chastine Dela Cruz and Norman Elpa reigned as champions.
The Table Tennis team rejoiced as they reigned during their tournament. In the Boys Singles Category, Zoren Leal and Rone Deliu both won a gold medal and Mark Soriano and Ryan Manaois also won gold medal in the Doubles category. For the Girls Singles Category, Abegail Almuete and Cindy Bango both won silver also with Joanna Marie Caneta and Jennifer Ventura in the doubles category.
Draze Dino and Jayvee Pitelan grabbed gold medals in the Lawn Tennis Boys Double category. Mirriam Tumapang and Analyn Cortez beat their opponents by winning a gold medal each in the Singles category. The same as Roxanne Jamandre and Hannaneel Doubles in the doubles category.
Aiming for the gold medal, Ronnel Arvin Yadao, Clark De Guzman, Keith Sembrano and Nykeeta Caslangen kicked their opponents during the Taekwondo competition while Daphne Dumo and Ivan Tindoc both won silver.
Bernard Nillo, Carl Nillo and Alvin Nillo showed their amazing skills in the chess tournament together with Kyla Camacho, Parsha Lagman and Anchita Darlien in the girls category.
In the Archery event, Jezreel Mitzi Hongitan, Charizza Mae Almeda, Rowenalyn Minong and Dyniela Dayrit all reigned as they won the event. In the boys category, Ronald Valentino, Azri Haji Masri, Justin Amiel Aquino and Melvin Jones Aquino also won and will be qualified to compete in the upcoming CARAA.
For the Arnis event, Bryan Pagaduan maintained his supremacy in the Boys Division full contact event-Fly weight division; also with Henry Gando in the Pin Weight Division. In the Feather Weight Division Richard Tambol from San Vicente Annex became the champ; also with Cristopher de Leon in the Extra Light Weight Division.
In the Anyo event boys category, Cristopher de Leon proved his skills by winning a gold medal in both individual single weapon and double weapon category. Henry Gando, Bryan Pagaduan and Gio Guillermo teamed up to win the gold medal in both team single weapon and double weapon category.
Showing their girl power, Camila Liwan in the Fly Weight Division; Charlot Velarde from Rizal annex in the Bantam Weight Division and Claire Dongga-as in the Extra Light Weight Division all became champs.
In Girls Category Anyo event, Claire Dongga-as bagged the gold medal in both individual single weapon and double weapon. Claire Dongga-as, Riva Shane Allas and Rudbeth Aspilan teamed up to win the gold medal in Team single weapon category while Carmela Liwan together with Dongga-as and Aspilan also bagged the gold medal in the team Double weapon category.

BCNHS Special Program in the Arts dominated this year’s WOW Philippines by winning in the various contests held last November 28, 2009.
The first and second years bagged Best in Choreography in the category Existing Festivals with their performance of the “Panagbenga Festival”. The third and fourth years garnered Best in Innovative Props in the New Concept Festivals with “Kaw-Kawitan Ken Up-Upa Festival” which portrayed the courtship of the indigenous people of Benguet.
In the afternoon, during the theatrical performances in Kultura Tako, An Ethnomusicology Exhibition, in the University of the Cordillera’s theater the SPA again won best in performance with their play of “Lumawig” a story of the life of Lumawig on Baguilota (earth) and how he punished his mortal wife for disobedience.
Part of the celebration of “Baguio City’s 100 Years in WOW Philippines” was the “Grand Parade of Cordillera Festival and Baguio Centennial Festival” through Session Road leading to Melvin Jones, where different participating schools and agencies performed street dances, and a program with Congressman Mauricio Domogan as guest speaker.

Being the defending national champion, Baguio City hosted the National Population Quiz held last November 19, 2009 in the Baguio Convention Center.
Mark Joshua Tan of BCNHS won the title last year. This year, Azher Roi Ferrer, coached by Ms. Mathrina Galasgas of the AP Department, ranked 4th in the said quiz bee following Ell June Abucay of Region 10, Gerald May Banue of Region 9, and Imee Rose Estrada of Region 3.
The annual event is initiated by the National Population Commission in cooperation with the Department of Education. Prior to the quiz bee, an Adolescent Health Youth Development Forum was held in the BCNHS auditorium. The forum was held to teach the students the importance of family planning. There was also a debate between BCNHS and Cordillera Science High School students. The debate was won by the BCNHS representatives Jhonna Joy Fernandez, Liana Mesina, and Fatima Simon.

City high has once again become part of Baguio’s history when it was recognized as one of the institutions considered to be Baguio’s builders. The awarding ceremony was held last November 14, 2009 at the University of Baguio gym. The award was received by Dr. Elma D. Donaal, the school principal.
The Baguio City National High School was considered to be one of Baguio’s builders mainly because it was one of the first high schools in the Cordillera to be established. It is also known for providing quality education therefore producing successful alumni and many achievers especially in the field of sports and arts. “Like they say, City High is known locally, nationally and internationally”, said Dr. Donaal when asked in an interview regarding the award. “I felt like I was on cloud nine. I was proud”, she added.
Other recipients of the Baguio builders award were other educational institutions, pioneer restaurants, book stores, major industries, rescue groups, public utilities, media, hospitals, clubs and organizations and families, among others. As a tribute to the said contributors of Baguio, aside from receiving a trophy and a medal, their names will be etched in the centennial wall.

Students of BCNHS Main & Annexes dominated this year’s Division Damath and Quiz Bee competition held last November 5 at Quezon Elementary School.
For the Damath competition, Klanz Baoanan, coached by Marcos Ogen of BCNHS Main garnered the 1st Place for the First Year level, and Ryan Christian Busocan coached by Mary Joyce Abuan of Fort del Pilar Annex got the 2nd Place. Kitley Dionisio of BCNHS Main won 2nd place in the 2nd Year level under Coach Carmen Bagbagen. Ruben Fegsar, coached by Vic Jomar Laderas of Bakakeng Annex won the 1st Place in the Third Year level, and Levious Bagyan of San Vicente Annex, coached by Cristine Lickias, won 3rd place. Rodel Catte of Lindawan Anex, coached by Roland Angsolan garnered 1st Place in the Fourth Year level. Bryan Garcia, coached by Leah Abad, was awarded 3rd Place.
In the Wuiz Bee, Jainariz Daniel Datuin, coached by Maria Linda Salero, won 1st Place in the First Year level. Francis Tan and Raymund Aragon, both accompanied by Coach Joyce Jimenez of the Main won 1st and 2nd Place respectively in the Third Year level. Ingrid Membrere under Coach Nino Martinez, garnered 2nd Place in the Fourth Year level.
Other participating schools included Pines City National High School, Small World, University of Baguio and Saint Louis University.
